Building Understanding in Mathematics

Building Understanding in Mathematics is a free professional learning community for educators who teach mathematics. It helps them share and learn methods of helping students understand the concepts associated with mathematics. It does this by providing a means by which educators can gain support and advice from other math educators everywhere. In this community, members are provided a way to share resources and participate in discussions as collaborating with other educators. One way the community does this is by hosting monthly webinars and online discussions. Topics related to teaching mathematics which are addressed in this community include suggested frameworks or timelines for teaching content, formative and summative assessments, engaging lessons that include different levels of depth of knowledge questions, using manipulatives in learning, applying content standards, mathematical practices, family involvement, use of technology in teaching, and differentiation. These topics, plus many more are available to the members of this community. There are also many other free benefits offered to members, As well as benefiting from live webinars each month, the webinars are also recorded and can be accessed at any time through the Community Toolbox. There are also CE certificates provided for those who attend and view the webinars. Along with the webinars is a discussion forum that goes on continuously so participants don't miss any of the conversations. A resource library, also available in the Community Toolbox, provides additional resources for educators to access along with web links to connect members with other resources. These web links are often suggested and added by members of the community as a way to continue to share strategies and ideas. Although this community would most benefit math teachers, others, including administrators, math coaches and specialists, and paraprofessionals are encouraged to join and participate.
